Supercuts stylist Latoya McDonald took a leap of faith when she made a significant career change after working as a nurse. While she cherished caring for others, particularly the elderly, the emotional toll of losing patients she grew close to left her frequently saddened. She knew she wanted a career where she could serve others, but one that felt more uplifting day-to-day.
During this career shift, Laytoya became incarcerated, where she was able to start her journey in cosmetology. While taking courses and learning this new craft, Supercuts offered employment to those interested after their release. Latoya was passionate about a stylist career and accepted a job at Supercuts in Macomb Township, Michigan, where she has worked for the past year.
“Latoya is a team player,” said Nicole, her Territory Leader. “She is incredibly driven and eager to learn and build her book of business.”
Latoya enjoys seeing her customers leave her chair looking and feeling their best. She particularly enjoys color services and is honing her skills in cutting hair with various textures.
“I love seeing my customers feel good about themselves,” Latoya said. “I enjoy constantly learning and perfecting my skills.”
Latoya’s intuitive sense has also served her well as a stylist. She recalls a client who seemed sad and had difficulty communicating what she wanted for her service. Latoya took a moment to ask if she was okay and offered her something to drink. The woman opened up, sharing that her long-time stylist, coincidentally also named Toya, had passed away. This connection made the woman feel more comfortable, and Latoya continues to do her hair to this day.
When she’s not working, Latoya focuses on self-care and self-love. She takes herself out on “weekly dates,” treating herself and continually learning more about herself.
