Cost Cutters stylist Melissa Harker has always had a passion for doing hair. Early on she knew she wanted to have a hands-on career, so entering the hair industry felt like the perfect fit. Twenty-five years later, Melissa is living her dream as a stylist working at Cost Cutters in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
It can be atypical for stylists to stay at one salon for 25 years, however Melissa credits the workplace environment and her fellow stylists as the main reasons for her tenure. Not only is her salon in a great location, but she is also able to rely on colleagues who are always willing to help and provide training when needed.
“I simply love what I do,” she said. “I love making people feel good by doing their hair. The relationships I’ve built with my clients over the years are truly special – they really are like family to me.”
It has been especially rewarding for Melissa when she sees her clients grow up and have kids of their own, who also become her clients. In fact, she has a 92-year-old client who has been coming to her for 22 years! Melissa loves seeing her on a weekly basis and makes her feel good with each hair service.
In her free time, Melissa enjoys spending time with her family, including her three children (ages 12, 15, and 16). They frequently camp together at Cook Forest, which has become a regular tradition. Additionally, Melissa is a Eucharist Minister at her church, Holy Parish. She and her husband lead a group that helps to guide engaged couples before they are married in the Catholic church.
As a seasoned hair professional, Melissa would advise aspiring stylists or those just starting out not to be afraid to try things and to always ask for help! “Set goals for yourself – even if they are little ones. Check them off one at a time and then create bigger ones down the line,” she said.
